Best Seasons for Nar-Phu and Kang-La Pass Trekking

April to May and September to October months of the year, where April to May most of the days are clear for views with pleasant walks in the shade of mild warm temperature, with much longer sunlight hour the season for wild flowers in full bloom times, especially rhododendron of various species from trees to bush of different colored flowers (national flower of Nepal the rhododendron).

April to May in late afternoon can get cloudy with chances of rain and snow in higher altitude sometimes.

Another best time for trek from September and October months around autumn /fall where most days are clear with blue sky and sunny days (for short while from morning till mid day) but much cold and freezing temperatures during morning and night times can expect snow sometimes during the walk on higher areas.

During autumn season sunlight hours are short, where most morning till late afternoon are clear for views and pleasant walks.

People and Culture

Low warm farm areas of Nepal Mid West are of mixed ethnic tribes of people with mostly Gurung, Magar with some Tamang including Hindu Brahmin, Chettries and Dalits with various cultures and custom with same farm traditional life of both Hindu and Buddhism religion.

Higher Manang Valley and Nar-Phu populated by Manang ethnic tribes of Northern Annapurna follows Buddhism religion similar culture to Tibetans with colorful impressive custom and traditions, beyond Manang around Kaligandaki within Mustang area inhabited by Thakali.

A tribe of Lower Mustang and of Kaligandaki River Valley of Buddhism religions and cultures, mid hills inhabited by Magar and Gurung people of both Hindu and Buddhism religions.

Starting with interesting overland journey to reach low-warm areas of Lamjung district around Mid-West area of the country within heavy farm lands and villages as walk leads to higher cooler green hills in the shade of snow capped peaks.

Walk continues heading through nice lovely villages of Jagat, Tal and Dharapani to reach at Koddo where our route diverts from main trail of Annapurna circuit for a week to reach the hidden areas of Nar and Phu villages.

Adventure first leads into narrow gorge filled with lovely alpine trees then slowly our route takes you into a wide open valley to reach first at Phu a weather beaten and time forgotten village enclosed within arid and barren environment which makes an eye catching pictures of surrounding landscapes and high snow peaks.

Enjoying time at Phu visiting its antique villages adorned with Buddhism religion of strong Tibetan influence of culture and custom where visit leads to its interesting old monasteries.

From Phu our next highlight takes you at Nar on route high Kang-la pass that separates Nar-Phu with main Manang area and Annapurna circuit trail, Nar which is almost same as Phu but smaller size village with interesting local community of traditional farm life herding Yaks and other cattle.

After Nar where adventure leads over high and scenic Kang-la pass with exceptional panorama of high mountain range to reach at Manang valley and back on main trail of Annapurna Circuit.

Walk leads on the major path with interesting time visiting old and nice Braga monastery and exploring local impressive culture and custom around Manang village and then heading towards the end of Manang valley at the base of Thorang-la pass.

Early morning heading for last climb of the adventure to reach the highest spot of the journey on top Thorang-la at 5,416 m festooned with thousands of colorful Buddhist prayer flags with overloaded panorama of mountains that surrounds this high scenic hill top.

Slowly walk comes to near complete with long descend to Muktinath within Mustang district, Muktinath a holy spot where large number of Hindu devotees visits for worship Lord Vishnu with various manifestations as Muktinath a god of Liberty.

From Muktinath walk leads to big drop into a valley of Kaligandaki River to reach our destination at Jomsom where our adventurous walks ends here within large town and headquarters of Mustang area also the home to Thakali people the tribe of Kaligandaki Valley. 

At Jomsom enjoy your last final overnight on high areas of Far North West Himalaya where next early morning a swift short and scenic flight brings you at famous and renowned city in Pokhara to complete our overwhelming adventure and experience on Nar-Phu and Kang-la Pass Trekking.

Detail Itenerary

On arrival at Nepal international airport in Kathmandu, where Professional Trekking Guide staff receives with warm welcome and then transfer to your hotel in the hub of Kathmandu. On checking your rooms getting refreshed then join in at hotel foyer / lobby meeting with other members of the trek, where our guide will brief you with information regarding Tilicho Lake and Semi Annapurna Circuit Trekking. Evening group welcome dinner in a nice Nepalese environment restaurant with native folk culture programs along with the dinner.
A free day in Kathmandu you can enjoy at leisure as well preparation for the trek, on this day interested people can join in our exciting guided sightseeing tour for half or full day tour at places of great interest around World Heritage Sites.
Morning after early breakfast taking a charted bus or tourist coach (depending upon the group size) for drive to reach Mid-West area of Nepal at Lamjung district in Besisar a large town of Lamjung area. From here on the dirt newly built road following Marysangdi River upstream to reach at Syange a small farm village with views of waterfalls for overnight stop.
Our fist day starts with climb on leaving Marysangdi River down below, as route leads through rice terraces fields and villages to reach at another nice farm village of Jagat. From Jagat village walk leads further on winding uphill to a lovely valley of Tal-besi where district of Manang starts, with time for a refreshing break walk further for few hours to reach at Dharapani village for overnight stop, Dharapani a nice village situated on the junction of Annapurna circuit and Manaslu trekking trail.
Second day from Dharapani morning walk follows on winding wide trail in the shade of rhododendron and pine forest heading past Bagachap and Danque villages with steep climb to Timang, from here onward into Buddhist country with interesting cultures along with views of Mt. Manaslu. Afternoon walk leads to Kodo village for overnight stop which is close to town of Chame, a major town and headquarter of Manang area.
From Koddo route diverts from main Annapurna Circuit trail towards far and remote corners of Manang and Annapurna Himalaya. Walk continue heading in a narrow valley around river gorge in between great high rock walls and cliffs of Pisang Peak and Kangguru Himal covered in dense woods of pine and rhododendron trees, walk follows upstream of Nar-Phu khola (stream). Continue further north towards isolated place past number of scattered small farm hamlets to reach at Dharmashala a small farm settlement. Journey continues heading due north to Phu around sheer wilderness, with chances of spotting few wildlife like Blue sheep and Snow Leopards. Route leads past several cattle herder’s huts and shades following the river upstream to Meta for overnight stop.
Morning heading north to Phu village into remote area of dry and arid terrain, as walk leads to Kang for overnight stop after an interesting day, Kang a small Yak herders settlement with dozen houses similar to Tibetan culture.
Today reach Phu village morning walk to Phu River following the same river for a while and then climb to a gorge for few hours to reach a wide glacial valley within pasture lands at Phu village of strong Tibetan culture and traditions.
Rest day at Phu for acclimatization, explore impressive village and Tashilkhang with Samdu Choling Monasteries and Kyauchyu waterfalls, Phu Village.
From Phu village walk back on the same trail for few hours then descend to a narrow gorge at Phu khola, from here a slow climb to reach at Yughat small village with chhorten a Buddhist shrines, then reaching a flat field at Nar Phedi for overnight stop.
Morning walk leads to Phu Khola for few hours to reach a suspension bridge over Phu Khola, crossing the bridge with steep climb for few hours reaching a flat area then walk to Nar village for overnight.
After Nar-Gaon walk to remote areas an interesting walk for few hours and then taking short ups and downs in some rocky and arid path, past cattle herder shelters heading further west following Temdenzon Khola (stream) facing views of snow peaks to reach Kang la pass base for overnight camp at above 4,530 m high.
Morning begins to cross first pass of the adventure with early morning start with views of Pisang Peak and Chulus, as walk leads to cross an icy stream over a long bridge and then slowly steep climb leads you to a ridge top of Kang la pass at above 5,322 m. Enjoy fascinating scenery of surrounding mountains views with some peaks of Damodar Himal range in the north with Annapurna huge massif range, Chulus Peaks, Lamjung Himal with Annapurna Himalayan range, after enjoying amazing views, walk downhill past Julu village and then to overnight stop at Ngawal village. From Kang la pass heading towards Manang area within popular and scenic route of Annapurna circuit trek.
Feeling great and strong and tired after crossing Kang-la, from Ngawal walk to Manang valley, then reach Humde a large village with an airstrip where few hour walk takes you at Manang village with visit of Braga old monastery, treasures old Buddhist relics, ancient wall painting and frescos, offers stunning views of Annapurna’s Himalaya, after Braga an hour walk reaches at Manang village and its wide windswept valley, in Manang overnight stop in cozy nice lodge, this village with houses in traditional Tibetans style and rich Buddhist culture.
After great enjoyable moment at Manang and at Nar-Phu on ‘off the beaten trails’ as morning walks lead to join main trail of Manang towards Thorang-la pass, morning walk leads past smaller cattle grazing area and then with slow climb uphill to reach at Yak Kharka an interesting high altitude treks with super views of snowcapped mountains. Just before Yak Kharka cross a small stream facing views of Gangapurna, Annapurna III and Chulu West Peak, and then short walk reaches you at Yak Kharka for overnight with its nice small lodge with close views of Chulu West and Gangapurna peaks.
From nice settlement of Yak Kharka walk leads higher area close to the base of Thorang-la, where slow a climb after crossing a river and walk along on the bank of Jarjung River. Finally reaching at the base of Thorang-la at Phedi means bottom of a pass or a hill, where steep climb for short hour reached you at Thorang High Camp for overnight stop.
Today walk leads to our highest point of the adventure and a Big Day!, after early breakfast where long climb reaches you on top Thorang-la after walking on steep trail to Thorang La Pass at above 5,416 m high. From this highest spot offers magnificent vista of landscapes with snowcapped peaks, from here a long descend to Muktinath for overnight stop, a holy place for both Hindus and Buddhists the word Muktinath means ‘a place for Nirvana or Liberation’.
From Muktinath an easy walk on winding road to reach at the bottom of a hill around Kaligandaki River Valley to reach the main headquarter town of Mustang at Jomsom, as walk slowly brings you into a nice town of Jomsom in the land of Thakali people. At Jomsom our walk completes and checking into a nice hotel and lodge with time in the afternoon to explore Jomsom town located on ancient and present Trans Himalaya Salt and Caravan route to Tibet.
Early morning breakfast and leave the lodge with short to Jomsom airport where scenic short flight brings you at scenic and beautiful Pokhara, during air grand views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range of peaks all the way till you land at Pokhara. Pokhara a leading and renowned touristic spot of Nepal and probably in whole Himalaya area, on reaching Pokhara airport transfer to your hotel located by the serene Phewa Lake with views of Annapurna and Machhapuchare Himal the famous Fish-Tail peak. Rest of the day free at leisure in Pokhara where one engage in activities hike to Peace Stupa, boating on Phewa Lake or short tour around Pokhara.
On leaving hotel in Pokhara after breakfast for exciting drive to reach back at Kathmandu where ride follows on same interesting road to Kathmandu and then back at your hotels, with afternoon free to enjoy personal and individual activities and shopping. This trek is suitable for average people who are moderately fit, thus no previous experience is required. Some physical fitness programs such as running, swimming, hiking is recommended before you embark on your journey. Whilst on the trek, it is common to experience some discomfort before being fully acclimatized.
To prepare for a strenuous trek like this you should begin training at least two to three months before your departure. As a guideline, an hour of aerobic exercise three to four times per week would be considered a minimum requirement. The best preparation is bushwalking involving relatively steep ascents and descents. If you can manage a couple of valley floor to ridgeline ascents per comfortable and able to enjoy the trek to the fullest.
