Mt. Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking where one can visit during spring times of April and May as well from mid September to November months of autumn / fall season.

April and May walk with longer sunlight hours during day time facing lovely scenery of the country with snow capped peaks, cold in the morning and night times and in shady area.

Chances of snow sometimes around higher side of Kanchenjunga from Ghunsa to base camp, mid September to November clear days for views and walks but shorter sunlight hours due to autumn season, can be freezing cold in the morning and night times with chances of snow sometimes.

People and Culture

Mid Hill mixed hill people mostly Rai and Limbu of Kirat ethnic tribe of eastern Nepal with some Magar, Tamang and Gurung.

Newar and Hindu Chettries and Brahmins also make huge communities of lower parts of Eastern Nepal and around Kanchenjunga lower and mid hills area.

Introduction

Mt. Kanchenjunga base camp trekking adventure leads you right beneath world’s third highest mountain and second high of Nepal at the height of 8,586 m and 28,169 ft, first conquest in May 25th 1955 by British Expeditions.

Mt Kanchenjunga base camp trekking area located at the very end of Nepal Far East within Kumbakarna Himalaya range close to the border of northern India state of Sikkim and straight north towards Tibet south eastern border.

A fascinating long journey of more than three weeks that takes you into pure wilderness an untouched and unspoiled areas where very few groups of trekkers and adventurer including mountaineers often venture this remote location of Nepal.

Mt. Kanchenjunga base camp trekking where adventure that takes you on a circuit from its north base camp and to its southern base camp where British Expedition first climbed Mt. Kanchenjunga from near around Yarlung glacier at Oakthang areas, and then walking back to our starting and ending point of the trek at Taplejung.

For some days walk leads beyond villages and human settlement in the harmony of tranquil wilderness within arid zone of ice and glaciers and into dense deep coniferous forest lined with tall rhododendron, oaks, pines, firs and magnolia trees.

Mt. Kanchenjunga base camp trekking commence with super scenic flight from the capital Kathmandu to reach low warm country of Far South Eastern around Terai the flatland of Nepal.

During air spectacular panorama of Himalayan peaks with views of Everest, Makalu and massive Kanchenjunga range as it lands at Bhadrapur town airport, where exciting drive takes you to cooler mid hills with garden of tea plantation at Ilam town and beyond to Taplejung area to start our adventurous walks.

Trek follows first heading towards North Kanchenjunga base camp at a place called Pangpema walking from nice farm villages and into cool forest soon leaving the tree lines for wild mountainous landscapes on reaching at Kanchenjunga base camp within its northern side at the height of 5,140 m.

With enjoyable hike around north base camp with views of adjoining peaks that surrounds the area, where walk leads to an alternative route crossing pass of Sele-La to reach near Kanchenjunga southern base camp at Oaktang.

After completing both sides of scenic Kanchenjunga area where return journey takes you back into farm villages and well cultivated fields to reach at Taplejung town and then to southern warm area for flight back to Kathmandu.

Detail Itenerary


On arrival at Nepal international airport in Kathmandu, where Professional Trekking Guide staff receives with warm welcome and then transfer to your hotel in the hub of Kathmandu. On checking your rooms getting refreshed then join in at hotel foyer / lobby meeting with other members of the trek, where our guide will brief you with information regarding Mt. Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking. Evening group welcome dinner in a nice Nepalese environment restaurant with native folk culture programs along with the dinner.
A free day in Kathmandu you can enjoy at leisure as well preparation for the trek, on this day interested people can join in our exciting guided sightseeing tour for half or full day tour at places of great interest around World Heritage Sites.
Morning transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for short scenic flight to Nepal Far South East around low warm areas of Terai belt to reach Bhadrapur airport in, during flight enjoy fantastic views of Himalayan chain of peaks with Everest, Makalu and Kanchenjunga range. Then landing at nice airstrip at Bhadrapur and get transferred in a jeep or four-wheel drive heading past low warm land to cooler hills at Ilam town famous for tea and its vast Tea-Garden with views of Kanchenjunga mountains. On reaching Ilam check into a nice local lodge for overnight stop with time to browse around the street of Ilam and observe local people with various culture and traditions.
Morning short drive to reach Taplejung at Sukhetar with a small airstrip that operates flight to Kathmandu, but very unsure and reliable of flight daily schedule due to bad weather and other conditions. On reaching Taplejung near Sukhetar transfer into local lodge or in tented camp for overnight with time to explore the town of Taplejung and observe the eastern people interesting cultures and traditional farm life.
After Taplejung, first day treks begins heading through several small farm village to reach near a nice village of Mitlung, as our route leads on winding path with few ups and down and within forest of rhododendron and pines trees; where walk leads to high hill with views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and Kabru peaks, walk continues with descend to Tamor River encountering short ups and down-hill to Sinuwa village for overnight stop.
From Sinuwa descend towards Tawa village to cross several smaller fresh streams reaching into spread out farm villages to reach at Chirwa, a nice village of mix tribes dominated mostly by Rai (Kirat tribe) some Magar, Tamang and Hindu Chettries, Brahmins with Dalits people with time to explore this nice village. Enjoying stops at Chirwa, morning walk heading past several neat smaller farm villages to reach a river bank of mix country where you can witness cultivation of cardamom fields in the dark shade of dense tree line. From here walk higher up over farm fields with short descend to overnight camp at Taplethok a lovely farm village close to Lelep, here air gets much cooler with dramatic change of culture of more Tibetan Buddhist religions.
After Taplethok within interesting farm villages as walk leads past many scattered farm villages with paddy fields and terraces to enter a patch of cool forest with short ups facing views of distant peaks and then reaching a nice agriculture farm village at Sakathum where overnight camp is pitched near the village back yard.
With nice and pleasant overnight in Sakathum, morning walk leads past several rural farm villages to reach on a river bank within a mix country where you can notice great cultivation of cardamom fields in the dark shade of dense tree line. Journey continues to reach higher gaining more elevation heading past farm fields and villages facing views of distant peaks with rolling green hills as walk leads into a valley filled with nice cool woodland then reaching a high village at Amjilosa for overnight stop.
Morning walk continues along higher side as altitude gain slowly leading towards much cooler area as paddy farms area stops, then walk gets closer to mountainous around high hill areas encountering several scattered summer pastures and grazing areas to reach at Gyabla or Kyapra for overnight stop within a small cattle herders and farm village, mostly populated by Tibetan like mountain tribes with Sherpa and Bhotia people of Buddhist religion and culture.
Morning begins with gentle walk on down-hill as climb starts for an hour within forest of pines-oaks and rhododendron trees as walk reaches a nice flat area on reaching Ghunsa river, from here on pleasant walk to Ghunsa village for overnight stop, a nice and interesting village populated by Bhotia and Sherpa tribes of Tibetan origin with houses built with stones includes neat small farm.
An ideal place for rest to get well with acclimatization before heading towards higher north at Kanchenjunga base camp, here with great opportunity for hike around this nice village of impressive Buddhist culture takes you at scenic view point hill for best panorama of mountains and surrounding landscapes.
Morning walks from Ghunsa climb to follow a river with views of waterfalls along the walks, encountering Yak herder camps along the trail depending upon grazing season, as trail continues to the bank of Ghunsa river, and into rhododendron and pine forest, as walk leads to a gradual ascend to Rambuk Kharkas and then crossing a small glacier landslide as walk continues with grand views of Khumbukarna and Janu and other high snow capped peaks. On leaving tree lines behind, heading into barren country with few short bushes and scrub of juniper, after Rambuk Kharka climb, and then trail leads to a gentle down to Khambachen after crossing a landslide section to camp at Khambachen, this scenic valley with grand views of Sharphu peaks with north face of Mt. Janu and Wedge peak.
From this spot following a route high above a river for sometimes, then heading further east, with climb to reach a place and walking over rocks and boulder then heading to a terminal moraine of Kanchenjunga glacier, on leaving Ramtang Kharka (a Sheppard place) where trail joins Kanchenjunga glacier and then crossing at a junction to reach at Lhonak for overnight stop with views of Kanchenjunga glacier with Mera, Nepal Peak and Wedge Peak.
Morning hike to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp the place around known as Pang Pema, which is our one of main highlight of the adventure, to stand at the foot of world 3rd highest Mt. Kanchenjunga and its massive range of peaks. As walk climb high above a river facing views of Kirat Chuli, Nepal Peak, Taple Sikhar, and Givegela Chuli. The first part of the climbs is gentle and then heading through a boulder on rocky trail. Walking to a glacier path all the way to Kanchenjunga Base Camp surrounded by giant peaks and then head back to Lhonak for overnight after a marvelous and exciting walk to Kanchenjunga base camp.
Morning walk leads back on same route heading past Kambachen to Ghunsa nice village for overnight stops after a long day walk with magnificent time at Kanchenjunga North base camp within array of high mountains.
On leaving northern side of Kanchenjunga area, as walk from here heads into complete wilderness of thick forest and grazing areas, continue trek with long climb to reach at Sele-La Kharka for overnight stop within a summer pasture and meadow.
Today walk leads higher to cross two scenic high passes in a day, rewards you with amazing views of whole of Kanchenjunga range as walk takes you through dense tree lines and crossing some streams to reach at the base of Sinion La after crossing over Sele-la pass a climb of few hours with gradual descend to reach at Tseram for overnight stop.
Morning free for optional day hike to Oktang takes you at Kanchenjunga South Base Camp, where British Expedition established base camp for the climb of Kanchenjunga summit in 1955, walking with close views of Yalung Glacier and south wall of Kanchenjunga, hike takes nearly three hours with views of Talung Peak and Kabru, after a scenic and exciting trek back to Ramche for overnight stop.
Morning walk to Ramchaur or Ramche heading for a steep climb for short hours within magnolia, rhododendron and bamboo forest to reach a stream as walk continues on gravel ground, leading to a shrine within a big boulder shaped like a serpent. Walk past forest area as our route leads to a riverbed, and then uphill to a terrace for overnight stop at Tseram, a place with roofless bivouac caves, facing views of terminal moraine fed from Yalung glacier and behind looking at Kabru 7,353m and Talung peak 7,349m.
After enjoyable time at Kanchenjunga South base camp, walk leads back into green forested areas to reach a place called Tortung within small cattle herder village surrounded by woodland as walk leads much downhill with short ups to reach at Lamite Bhanjyang within a quaint area for overnight stop.
An easy day walk as altitude gets lower on every hours of trek with downhill and some short ups heading into serene forest of rhododendron and pine tree lines and crossing streams to enter a gorge to reach an open wide area at nice small village of Yamphudin for overnight stop.
Starting morning walk on steep downhill towards nice rice and millet fields, and into forested area within Nandeva khola / stream on the left side of the trail, crossing over then on downhill to a river, as our route reach a high hill where climbs start leads into forested areas to reach at Loppoding village. After Loppoding walk leads to up and down-hill reaching a hill village at Yangpang, and then along upper edge of a ridge with slow climb for an hour towards Pompe Dhada, located on a crest of a scenic hill for overnight stop with view of Mt. Jannu.
Today another long walk to reach at Kunjari near Simbu and Kande Bhanjyang as morning starts on downhill into farm villages, dominated mostly by Hindu tribes a mixture of Brahmins, Chettries as well with Kirat people includes Rai and Limbu, practice Hinduism along with their own ancient heritage of deities and nature spirit. Walk leads to farm village then descend to Phawa khola, and cross Phawa khola towards Pokora village, the path from here takes you within farm field and suspension bridge as route leads to a climb up to Kunjari village for overnight stop.
From this small hill village walk to Kande Bhanjyang, with grand views of Kanchenjunga and Yalungkang peaks, where our last day walk of the adventure takes you back at Tapeljung, heading across farm villages to reach at Sukhetar, a small town with an airstrip that flies to Kathmandu via Biratnagar city, at present due to unpredictable flight timing of local flight leading to cancellation, to avoid much hassle we have taken safe and best route from Bhadrapur to fly in and out to Kathmandu or taking an overland long drive. As walk continues for short while reaching at Taplejung main town of the district, here enjoy last overnight stop on this hill town famous for local drink known as Tomba a warm drink with mild alcoholic contents made from millets which is widely grown around this areas.
On completing our adventurous walks on both side of Kanchenjunga base camps, morning a long drive of more than five hours to reach lower warm country of eastern Nepal Terai area, as drive leads past Ilam town and its vast tea-garden the downhill to warmer place on the main highway to reach a large town at Bhirtamod, with overnight stop in one its best available lodge and hotels.
After a great adventure around high and mid hills of Eastern Himalaya and at Kanchenjunga base camp short drive from Bhirtamod town to Bhadrapur airport then board in the aircraft for scenic short flight to Kathmandu, on landing at Kathmandu airport transfer back to your respective hotels, with afternoon free to enjoy personal and individual activities and shopping.
Final and last day in the country of Himalaya wonder of interesting cultures, after a memorable adventure and experience on Mt. Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking, as per your time for your international flight our staff and guide transfer you to airport for flight homeward bound or to your next port of call.

FAQ

This trek is suitable for average people who are moderately fit, thus no previous experience is required. Some physical fitness programs such as running, swimming, hiking is recommended before you embark on your journey. Whilst on the trek, it is common to experience some discomfort before being fully acclimatized.
To prepare for a strenuous trek like this you should begin training at least two to three months before your departure. As a guideline, an hour of aerobic exercise three to four times per week would be considered a minimum requirement. The best preparation is bushwalking involving relatively steep ascents and descents. If you can manage a couple of valley floor to ridgeline ascents per comfortable and able to enjoy the trek to the fullest.
Yes, our airport representative will be there to greet you at the airport. S/he will be displaying an Ace the Himalaya signboard outside the airport terminal. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel in our tourist vehicle.
