Best Seasons for Mt. Dhaulagiri and Hidden Valley Trekking

April and May and from September to mid November months of the year, April and May during spring season days are clear for views and pleasant walks with moderate temperatures, longer sunlight hours when wild flowers are in bloom, especially rhododendron of various species from trees to bush of different colors (national flower of Nepal the rhododendron).

April and May months late afternoon can get cloudy with chances of rain and snow in higher altitude sometimes.

September to mid November around autumn / fall best times with clear blue sky and sunny days (for short while from morning to mid day) can be cold and freezing during morning and night times above 1,800 m high.

Sunlight is short during autumn and winter seasons but most of the morning till late afternoon are clear for views and pleasant walks with chances of snow around higher areas above 2,000 m.

People and Culture

Low warm farm areas of Nepal Far West are of mixed ethnic tribes of people with mostly Magar with some Gurung and Hindu Brahmin, Chettries and Dalits of various cultures and custom with same farm traditional life of both Hindu and Buddhism religion.

Higher mid hill around Dhaulagiri region where villages populated by Magar ethnic tribe of Western Nepal, follows Hindu religion along with their ancestral heritage rites, worshipping nature and mountain spirits.

Magar are farmers and cattle herders where most men folk are famous as courageous and brave Gorkha soldiers in British, Indian Army and as well in Singapore police infantry.

Other side of Dhaulagiri around Lower Mustang at Kaligandaki River valley populated by Thakali people interwoven with Buddhism religion which you will find nice Thakali village of Marpha and the main headquarter town of Mustang in Jomsom.

Mt. Dhaulagiri at 8,167 m / 26,795 ft listed as world’s seventh highest peak which was conquered in May 13th, 1960 by Swiss Expeditions with support of Nepalese Sherpa climbing guides.

A scenic and adventurous walks to reach at Dhaulagiri base camp at the height of 4,750 m high and crossing the highest point at 5,360 m over French Pass to reach at scenic Hidden Valley enclosed within high peaks and rocky hills.

Mt. Dhaulagiri Base Camp and Hidden Valley trekking starts with drive to reach far areas of Western Nepal where journey leads past beautiful city of Pokhara and beyond.

On reach the far end of West Nepal around district of Mygdi where the main river known by the same name where drive follows the Mygdi River to the end of the road to start our wonderful adventure walks.

Walk leads to follow Mygdi River heading past rural farm villages and hamlets then leaving the last village of Bagar heading towards higher green hills covered with tall dense rhododendron, pines, oaks and fir trees.

After leaving the village within sheer wilderness the walks slowly reach at great ice fields and glaciers of southern flanks of Dhaulagiri peaks on leaving the green vegetation and tree lines for some days.

Adventure carries on criss-crossing over Dhaulagiri glacier to reach our main destination at Dhaulagiri base camp just beneath towering Mt. Dhaulagiri with Tukuche peaks at close distance.

From the base camp walk leads to cross high French Pass towards wide open Hidden Valley, with time here to explore around on least visited areas by other trekkers and adventurer.

Finally our walk slowly come to an end after crossing another high pass of Thapa / Dhampus pass to reach downhill trail back into green vegetation and pine trees all the way to Marpha village where our trek concludes in this nice charming village.

Marpha locate by the bank of Kaligandaki River within Mustang area a gem of a village and famous for apple orchard and its products, from Marpha next morning takes you large Jomsom town to board in a small aircraft to reach at beautiful Pokhara.

At Pokhara where our remarkable adventure completes after a great experience around High Mountain range of Western Nepal and on Mt. Dhaulagiri Base Camp and Hidden Valley Trekking.

Detail Itenerary

On arrival at Nepal international airport in Kathmandu, where Professional Trekking Guide staff receives with warm welcome and then transfer to your hotel in the hub of Kathmandu. On checking your rooms getting refreshed then join in at hotel foyer / lobby meeting with other members of the trek, where our guide will brief you with information regarding Mt. Dhaulagiri Base Camp and Hidden Valley Trekking. Evening group welcome dinner in a nice Nepalese environment restaurant with native folk culture programs along with the dinner.
A free day in Kathmandu you can enjoy at leisure as well preparation for the trek, on this day interested people can join in our exciting guided sightseeing tour for half or full day tour at places of great interest around World Heritage Sites.
Morning either in charted bus, or in car as well in tourist coach (depending upon the size of a group), where overland journey takes you on main busy Nepal highway to reach country Mid-West at beautiful Pokhara. Pokhara an amazing city located on the laps of towering Annapurna Mountain range with famous Machhapuchare Himal ‘Fish Tail’ where reflection of the peaks touches its serene Phewa Lake. At Pokhara transfer to your respective hotels by the lake side with time wander on the street around the lake lined with shops and stores with many good hotels and restaurants. (Flying options taking 30 minutes flight to reach Pokhara from Kathmandu)
Adventure starts with exciting drive beyond Pokhara valley to reach at low warm areas of Beni headquarter town of Mygdi district that covers all the way to Dhaulagiri base camp. From here drive continues past rural farm village within low warm area following Mygdi River to reach at a farm village in Darbang for overnight stop, where our walks start towards high Dhaulagiri base camp and onward.
First day trek with short climb over a steep ridge, walking past farm villages and then on pleasant trail along Mygdi River, as our route follows the same Mygdi River right to its glacier source at Dhaulagiri base camp. After a good day walk then reach our first overnight camp by the river, afternoon at leisure with rest or get chilled in the cool river.
Morning walk follows the river for short while reaching a farm village at Jugepani for possible lunch stop, after a rest then leading to a steep climb above a ridge and then downhill through forest to camp at Bagar, a farm village, Bagar will be last village till walk joins at popular Kaligandaki route at Marpha.
On leaving farm Bagar village as walk leads into forest for an hour with climb into forested area of bamboo, oaks and rhododendron trees.After climb then descend to reach at Dovan for overnight camp, Dovan a small temporary settlement with small teahouse and shops.
From Dovan morning walk leads to an unstable wooden bridge over a stream at a confluence of Mygdi river, after crossing walking into forest all the way to overnight stop at Chartare also called Bhainse Kharka.
After overnight in the middle of dense forest, today walk leads to complete wilderness on leaving the vegetation and tree lines for few days. Morning walk leads closer to Mt. Dhaulagiri South Face flank, with views of Putha Huinchuli, Manapathi and Dhaulagiri south flank, after good hours of walk reaching a glaciated area on a clearing named as Italian camp. From here adventure begins as the walk leads on glacier, moraine with climb over rocky ridge to reach Pakhaban also called Japanese camp. This camp offers super views of South West Face of Dhaulagiri and Manapathi, Puttha Hiunchuli with huge ice wall of Tsaurabong Peak.
Morning walk follows moraine and iceberg in some section, this morning climb needs a good team work with guides, porters and fellow members to be on right side of the trail over glaciated sections. After a tough walk over glacial section reaching a rocky open area around Dhaulagiri where base camp is located. Overnight camp at base camp the highlight of this adventure with closest view of world 7th highest Mt. Dhaulagiri I at 8,167 m, includes view of tumbling icefalls, glacier and Tukuche peak with West peaks of Dhaulagiri II (7,751 m.), Dhaulagiri III (7,715 m.) and Dhaulagiri IV (7,618 m.).
From this unique and wonderful campsite morning walk leads to the highest point of the adventure over French pass at 5,360 meters. After the high pass a short descend to reach a wide grassy meadow a huge field at hidden valley for overnight camp. Offering views of Sita Chuchura, Mukut Himal, and Tashi Kang 5,386 meters, Tukche Peak and Dhaulagiri I.
Today a rest and spare or contingency day in case of bad weather condition including physical conditions of members, staff and porters. If all goes well we can carry on to next camp to more safe and nice area to make the next day shorter towards Pokhara. On this day if are not moving just relax and enjoy the views and explore on this least trekked area around Hidden valley.
After a pleasant rest, morning starts on a gentle path for few hours to reach last pass of this adventure at Thapa also called Dhampus pass with 5,250 meters high. On reaching the pass with grand rare views of Annapurna Himal, Nilgiris peaks, and then our walk descend to Yak Kharka for overnight camp and back into green vegetation of Juniper, Burberry and rhododendron bushes.
Morning walk with long descend back into villages, after being in complete wilderness for past few days, as downhill walk leads back into forest of firs, pines and rhododendron trees, after few hours of easy descend reaching at one of the charming village at Marpha where all houses are painted white, this gem of a village with an interesting monastery. Marpha located in lower Mustang district around Kaligandaki river valley, this area famous for delicious apples and product like cider, brandy local brew, juices, dry apples and apricot fruits. Enjoy the afternoon in the comfort of nice lodges and explore this beautiful village.
Early morning breakfast and leave the lodge at Marpha village where short drive takes you at Jomsom airport, from Jomsom a short and scenic flight takes you at scenic and beautiful Pokhara, during air grand views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range of peaks all the way till you land at Pokhara. Pokhara a leading and renowned touristic spot of Nepal and probably in whole Himalaya area, on reaching Pokhara airport transfer to your hotel located by the serene Phewa Lake with views of Annapurna and Machhapuchare Himal the famous Fish-Tail peak. Rest of the day free at leisure in Pokhara where one engage in activities hike to Peace Stupa, boating on Phewa Lake or short tour around Pokhara.
On leaving hotel in Pokhara after breakfast for exciting drive to reach back at Kathmandu where ride follows on same interesting road to Kathmandu and then back at your hotels, with afternoon free to enjoy personal and individual activities and shopping. This trek is suitable for average people who are moderately fit, thus no previous experience is required. Some physical fitness programs such as running, swimming, hiking is recommended before you embark on your journey. Whilst on the trek, it is common to experience some discomfort before being fully acclimatized.
To prepare for a strenuous trek like this you should begin training at least two to three months before your departure. As a guideline, an hour of aerobic exercise three to four times per week would be considered a minimum requirement. The best preparation is bushwalking involving relatively steep ascents and descents. If you can manage a couple of valley floor to ridgeline ascents per comfortable and able to enjoy the trek to the fullest.
